internationale vierschanzentournee

One of the most recognizable landmarks of Innsbruck is undoubtedly the Bergisel Ski Jump. Towering over the city, the ski jump has played host to many national and international ski jumping competitions, including those of the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. We were lucky enough to witness the qualifying round of the 2014 International Four Hills Tournament today.

Impressive is only one of the words that comes to mind when trying to describe this event. The tallest point of the jumping tower stands at 250 meters above Innsbruck, a city that already sits nearly 575 meters above sea level. We visited the ski jump in October and rode the gondola all the way to the top. The view was breathtaking and equally terrifying. I can't even begin to think how it would feel to shimmy out to the starting bar, stand up, launch myself down a snowy ramp, and fly into the air. And that's exactly what the competitors did.

What a welcome to Innsbruck, mommy! We're thrilled to host you for the next few days until your better half arrives.

  1. That is probably a beautiful view...but I too can't imagine skiing off of it.
